چکیده

• It has been demonstrated that thyroid hormone and its analogues reduce plasma cholesterol levels both in hypoand in euthyroid individuals; and also that D-thyroxine is much less toxic and less calorigenic than L-thyroxine. Katz and Pick reported that thyroid hormone given to chicks on an atherogenic diet, either as desiccated thyroid or thyroxine, suppressed hypercholesterolemia, but the effects on atherogenesis were inconsistent. Although numerous reports describe the effect of D-thyroxine on plasma cholesterol levels, there are at this time few studies of its effect on atherosclerosis."

Further observations on the effects of thyroid hormone preparations on cholesterolemia and atherogenesis in cholesterol-fed cockerels.

Administration of large doses of thyroid hormone preparations (desiccated thyroid powder, thyroxine, triiodothyronine, diiodotyrosine) to cholesterol-fed chicks was associated with decreased rate of weight gain and partial inhibition of hypercholesterolemia. Consistent, definitive inhibition of aorta and coronary atherogenesis was not observed, despite partial suppression of hypercholesterolemi...

Prevention of coronary atherosclerosis by estrogen-androgen administration in the cholesterol-fed chick.

Estrogens are highly effective both prophylactieally and therapeutically against cholesterol-induced coronary atherogenesis in cockerels. The relative immunity of premenopausal women to coronary sclerosis may be related to the presence of these ovarian hormones. Therefore, estrogens may be useful in the treatment of human coronary atherosclerosis. With this object in mind, the elimination of th...

Susceptibility of the ovariectomized hen to cholesterol-induced coronary atherogenesis.

PREVIOUS studies from this department demonstrated that exogenous estrogens protected cockerels against cholesterol-induced coronary atherogenesis." Further, mature, egg-producing hens, intact or oviduct-ligated, were also markedly resistant to the development of diet-induced coronary lesions. It was postulated that this protection was a resultant of the endogenous, physiologic estrogen secreti...
